EXERCISE STRESS ECHOCARDIOGRAPHY

What is EXERCISE STRESS ECHOCARDIOGRAPHY?

Exercise Stress Echocardiography, or Stress Echo, is a dynamic and non-invasive test designed to evaluate how your heart responds to stress, typically induced by physical exercise. This test combines two powerful diagnostic tools: echocardiography and exercise.

WHen is aN EXERCISE STRESS ECHO recommended?

  • Assessment of Heart Function: To evaluate how well your heart is pumping and identify any areas of weakness.
  • Valvular Heart Disease: To detect and assess the severity of heart valve problems.
  • Structural Abnormalities: To identify congenital or acquired structural issues in the heart.
  • Cardiac Health Monitoring: As part of ongoing heart health assessments or post-treatment follow-up.

What happens during a EXERCISE STRESS ECHO?

When you arrive for your Exercise Stress Echocardiography, here's what you can anticipate:

  1. Preparation: You'll be asked to wear comfortable clothing. It's important to inform your healthcare provider about any medications you're taking, as they may need to be adjusted before the test.
  2. Baseline Measurements: You'll begin with a resting echocardiogram to establish a baseline for comparison. A small ultrasound transducer (a device that emits sound waves) will be placed on your chest to capture images of your heart.
  3. Exercise: You'll be guided through a controlled exercise routine, such as walking on a treadmill. The intensity of the exercise will gradually increase, and your heart's response will be closely monitored.
  4. Continuous Monitoring: Throughout the test, your heart rate, blood pressure, and ECG will be continuously recorded.
  5. Echocardiogram During Exercise: At peak exercise, the echocardiogram will be repeated to evaluate how your heart functions under stress.
  6. Cooling Down: After exercise, you'll cool down, and your vital signs will continue to be monitored.
  7. Post-Test Analysis: The images and data collected during the test will be analyzed to assess your heart's function and any abnormalities that may become apparent during exercise.
